Verbal Deception is a four-piece folk/heavy metal group hailing from Calgary, AB, Canada.
Combining folk, death, progressive and power metal elements makes their music individual in style and difficult to classify. With their unique sound and lyrical themes, Verbal Deception strives to bring their own brand of folk metal to the forefront.
Initially forming in late 2002 with Kresho Klarich (Guitars), Walt Fleming (Keyboards) and Taylor Pierce (Drums), the three-piece created some of the trademark sounds of the band, writing the first few songs together. This line-up remained together until mid 2003 when John Ross Iocca replaced Pierce on drums. With this new line up, they played their first few live shows. Shortly after the release of their six song EP in April 2004, Jordon Bourgeault joined the band on drums, replacing Iocca. The band maintained an active gigging schedule as a three-piece throughout 2005 when they recruited Terry Baldwin (Caveat) on bass. Gathering acclaim in the underground scene, Verbal Deception released their 2006 debut full length “Aurum Aetus Piraticus” which steadily climbed local and national loud charts, resulting in a number of live and print interviews and podcasts, including the Entropy League and CBC Radio 3. In May 2006, Matt Petti joined the group on bass in place of Terry Baldwin, thus completing the line up that still exists today. Since the release of the album, the band ventured out in 2006 on six-city tour of the US, and in 2007, a nine-city Canadian/US summer tour with Wolven Ancestry and Nefastus Dies. The tour included an appearance at Seattle’s “Hot August Metal Fest”.
Their first release, “Aurum Aetus Piraticus” remained on the Canadian Campus Loud charts for 13 weeks after its release in 2006 and received many positive reviews from sources such as “Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles” and the Finnish metalzine “Lamentations of a Flame Princess.”
Verbal Deception has shared the stage with folk metal Legends Finntroll, and with Canadian metal veterans, Three Inches of Blood, Unexpect, Anonymus, Wolven Ancestry and Nefastus Dies.
Currently, the group are writing songs in preparation for a new full length, and also planning upcoming tour dates for summer 2008 and 2009.
